Ms Irene Liu graduated from Nanyang Girls high, Raffles Junior college and National University of Singapore (NUS). Ms Liu also holds a Master Degree of Science in National University of Singapore (NUS).
Ms Irene Liu has joined one of Singapore’s leading polytechnics as a lecturer, specialising in biomedical science. She has been recognized for her ability to make abstract concepts easy to understand and for making learning fun. She was popular among her students because of her patient and friendly nature.
She is so passionate about teaching that she decided to become a full time tutor. With her strong academic background in biology, Ms Irene Liu was soon recognised as a lead tutor in her former tuition centre.
Ms Irene Liu enjoyed teaching and makes every effort to make the concepts easier to understand and to be memorised. For example, she gives students the opportunity to build DNA models to understand how double-helix structures are formed. During her class on cell division, Ms Liu guides students in how to model Play-Doh to visualize the behavior of chromosomes. She took the initiative to develop a standard booklet that contains compulsory key words and answers to challenging questions. Through carefully crafted questions, the students practice the key words repeatedly until they become part of their vocabularies.
As a full-time tutor, Ms Liu coaches O-level/IP students from different schools. She is well-versed in the O-level syllabus and IP school syllabi, including RGS, RI, HCI, NYGH, and ACSI. Her small class sizes (of max 6 students) enable her to tailor content to learner’s needs and educational goals. Taking a dynamic approach, Ms Liu gauges students’ progress, identifies areas for growth, and designs different sets of questions for each student as needed.
In addition to her carefully planned lessons, Ms Liu leaves plenty of time to practice and review exam questions – adjusting the level of difficulty according to her students’ mastery of the subject matter. This ensures that the students are fully prepared for even the toughest questions. At the beginning of each lesson, Ms Liu distributes a review quiz to reinforce learning objectives. Topical tests are administered and graded strictly according to answer keys and mock exams are given in preparation for major exams.
Ms Irene Liu is particularly adept at coaching graduating sec 4 students. Based on her 10 years of experience working with over a few hundreds of students, she has seen vast improvements in their skill levels and knowledge acquisition – to the point where she managed to help them get A1 and A2 in their O-level and end of year exams. One student even topped her class in her preliminary exam within 4 months of joining Ms Liu’s group (despite a beginning grade of C6).
